  •  Environmental Radioactivity

Study of prediction models of seismic events in the Etnean area and in the hyblean region, characterized by intense stress and in which considerably intense seismic events are expected caused by the Hyblean-Maltese escarpment. This activity is developed taking into account that for years the international scientific community has shown that earthquakes characterized by soil fractures or displacements of seismogenic faults are accompanied by strong emissions of radioactive gases (radon) from the ground, with high carcinogen potential.

Objectives:

  • To collaborate in the management of radon gas detection network, connected to the seismometric network, in the Ragusa territory and in two sites in the Etnean area.

  • to provide scientific advice about monitoring of indoor radon in sites characterized by intense seismological activity, for the protection of urban areas allocated on seismogenic faults at high risk of Radon exhalation.
