Pint of Science 2019

Meetings and scientific debates in pubs

Pint of Science, the largest scientific dissemination event in the world, for the third time in Catania thanks to the CSFNSM which is its local sponsor. Three days of science and beer to informally talk about the most recent scientific research. And this year we enrich our offer with 4 pubs and 5 themes.

Where and when:

 20-21-22 Maggio dalle 20:30

Mr. Hyde Pub - Via S. Filomena 30/32

Joyce Irish Pub - Via Montesano 46

The Boozer - Via Caff 6

The Glory Hole - Via Gemmellaro 45

From the microplastics that invade our sea to the superhuman abilities of  deep learning algorithm; from exoplanets to the slipping of Etna; and again, the charm of the brain and the mysteries that lie behind autism, the beauty of physics and solar storms, nanotechnologies and the evolution of the universe, science at the service of art and the effects of cheeseburgers on our body. All this, and much more, is Pint of Science Catania 2019, the third edition of the international scientific divulgation event born in 2012 in the United Kingdom and which has reached 23 Italian cities and 24 countries in the world, covering all five continents.

An appointment that is now becoming a classic in the spring of Catania, which returns for the third consecutive year from Monday 20 to Wednesday 22 May, and which this year also sees Catania literally split into four: in fact, the pubs involved are growing. "After the experience of the past editions - explains Alessia Tricomi, local coordinator of Pint of Science since the first year, and this year also national manager and president of the association Pint of Science Italy - we wanted to increase the supply of pints of science in Catania and, to the three pubs that have been with us for two years already in this bubbly experience, Joyce Irish Pub (via Montesano), Mr. Hyde Pub (via S. Filomena) and The Boozer (via Caff), this year joins The Glory Hole (via Gemmellaro). Atoms to Galaxies, Tech Me Out, Planet Earth and Beautiful Minds / Our Body are the macro-themes which will be discussed at the foot of Liotru, corresponding to physics, natural sciences, neurosciences and biology ".

"A feature of Pint of Science is a different and original way of bringing the latest frontiers of scientific research among people. No chairs and blackboards but a nice glass of beer in hand to discuss together the mysteries of nature and the latest discoveries that will improve our future - explains Alessia Tricomi. The format, by now proven, this being the seventh edition worldwide and the fifth in Italy, it consists of bringing together the public, every evening, with a different researcher and discussing and interacting on a topical subject in the field of astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology or sociology. All with a language that at the same time is simple but not trivial. Our slogan is talk of science but in front of a pint of beer ».

Catania is at its third edition of pints of science: «Catania is a lively and curious city - comments Alessia Tricomi, director of CSFNSM and professor at the University of Catania -. The response of the people of Catania in recent years has been very warm and exciting and, therefore, not only could we not not replicate this year but we also accepted the challenge of increasing the supply of science pints. For the 2019 edition, we have prepared a truly rich program with very prestigious, internationally renowned researchers, but also, in the spirit of Pint of Science, giving space to young people. We hope that this year too Catania will let us perceive its warmth and enthusiasm, counting on the variety of topics that will be discussed in the four pubs, three of which faithfully accompany us from the very first edition. With the managers of the pubs a really nice partnership has been created that we hope will continue even in the years to come. And the enthusiasm with which the newcomer also welcomed our proposal really gives us hope! A special mention and a thank you also go to the Pint of Science Catania team that made and is making all this possible. It is a close-knit and energetic team that this year has also been further enriched by colleagues and friends with whom we share this desire to communicate science in an informal way ».

Of the twelve talks scheduled at Pint of Science Catania 2019 - one in each pub for three evenings, all starting at 8.30 pm - we suggest Monday 20 the intervention by Isabella Pagano, director of INAF's Astrophysical Observatory in Catania at the Joyce Irish pub, which will accompany us on a journey to discover the extra-solar planets, illustrating the future INAF missions in which Catania is also at the forefront, while, simultaneously, at Mr. Hyde, Paolo Romano, researcher of CNR-IBAM, head of the LANDIS laboratory at the INFS LNS, will talk about the link between art and science, on Tuesday 21st, at The Glory Hole, Maria Vincenza Catania, CNR neuroscientist, will talk about autism and behavioral disorders; Wednesday 16, at The Boozer, Alessandro Bonforte, a volcanologist, will talk about Etna and its "slips" at sea.

Pint of Science – History

In 2012 Michael Motskin and Praveen Paul were two researchers at Imperial College London. They set up an event called "Meet the researchers" in which some Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, motor neuron disease and multiple sclerosis patients could go to their labs to see what kind of research they did. The event was very motivating for both visitors and researchers.

They thought that if people want to go into laboratories and meet researchers, why not bring researchers out to meet people? And so was born Pint of Science. In May 2013, the first edition of Pint of Science was held, which brought some of the most renowned researchers to tell their innovative work to science and beer lovers. It was a resounding success.

In Italy, the event landed in 2015 involving first six cities - Genoa, Trento, Siena, Rome, Pavia, Milan - even more than tripled in the space of a few editions. This year, in fact, the festival will be held simultaneously in 23 Italian cities (Avellino-Sarno, Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Ferrara, Genoa, L'Aquila, Milan, Naples, Padua, Palermo, Pisa-Lucca, Pavia, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Siena, Trento-Rovereto, Trieste and Turin) and 24 countries literally in every corner of the world (Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Holland, Paraguay, Portugal, United Kingdom, Russia , Singapore, Spain, United States, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa and Thailand).

Pint of Science is organized by the non-profit cultural association "Pint of Science Italia" and is a non-profit event in which everyone collaborates on a voluntary basis, realized thanks to the support of INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics), AISM ( Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association), INAF (National Institute of Astrophysics) and SIERR (Italian Society of Reproduction and Research Embryology). At Cataniasponsor of the event is the CSFNSM (Sicilian Center for Nuclear Physics and Structure of Matter), engaged for over sixty years in basic and applied scientific research and in training young researchers.
